Stress, the Nervous System and Women's Health - A Gold Coast Acupuncturist’s Perspective

Stress is something we all experience, but ongoing stress can have a significant impact on how we feel and function day to day.

For women, periods of increased stress can occur alongside many stages of life, from demanding work and family responsibilities to fertility treatment, pregnancy, postpartum life, menopause and beyond.

What happens when we're stressed?

Our nervous system is constantly responding to our environment. When we perceive a threat or significant demand, the body's stress response helps us to respond.

This response is useful in short bursts. The challenge comes when we rarely have opportunities to switch off and recover.

You may notice changes in your sleep, energy, digestion, mood or ability to concentrate when life feels particularly demanding.

Stress and the menstrual cycle

The menstrual cycle is influenced by complex communication between the brain, ovaries and other systems within the body.

Significant stress can be one of many factors associated with changes in menstrual patterns. However, changes to your cycle can have many possible causes, so persistent or concerning changes are worth discussing with your GP, myself or another healthcare provider to discuss possible ways to support you.

Supporting your nervous system

There is no single magic solution for stress.

Simple practices can provide opportunities for recovery throughout the day though. These could include:

  • regular nourishing meals

  • gentle movement

  • time outdoors

  • adequate sleep where possible

  • breathing or relaxation practices

  • meaningful social connection

  • reducing unnecessary demands

  • seeking professional support when needed

And sometimes the most important step is recognising that you don't have to manage everything yourself.

Where does acupuncture fit?

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine use their own traditional frameworks for understanding health and well-being. Some people incorporate these practices into their broader approach to self-care.

If you're considering complementary healthcare, it should form part of an appropriately coordinated approach to your overall health.

You don't have to wait until you're completely overwhelmed

Looking after your nervous system isn't about eliminating stress from your life. It's about creating opportunities for your body and mind to rest, recover and reconnect.

Sometimes well-being starts with something very simple: pause, breathe and notice how you're actually feeling.

And of course… Acupuncture can play a beautiful role in regulating your nervous system and helping you feel more like yourself again.
