Postpartum Recovery Through the Seasons: Supporting Yourself in the Fourth Trimester
The arrival of your little love, undoubtedly brings enormous change. While SO much of the attention naturally goes towards caring for your new little bundle of joy, the physical and emotional recovery of YOU, the mother, deserves just as much consideration.
The fourth trimester refers to the first few months after birth in many Eastern cultures including Traditional Chinese medicine. It is said to be a time of great transition, recovery and adjustment. There is no single "right" way to experience it, and every postpartum journey is SO different.
Nourishment and recovery
After pregnancy and birth, your body needs time and resources to recover. Regular nourishing meals, adequate hydration and as much rest as your circumstances allow can be important foundations of postpartum wellbeing.
Rather than aiming for perfection, consider what is realistic for you. Having simple meals available, accepting offers of help and creating small periods of rest can make daily life feel more manageable.
Working with the seasons
Chinese medicine has traditionally placed importance on living in harmony with the seasons. This can offer a gentle framework for thinking about postpartum self-care throughout the year.
Spring can be a time of gradual renewal. As energy and routines begin to shift, gentle movement and time outdoors may become more accessible.
Summer brings heat and longer days. Hydration, nourishing foods and opportunities to rest away from the heat are particularly important.
Autumn encourages a return to rhythm and routine. As the weather cools, warm meals, comfortable clothing and creating supportive daily rituals will feel particularly grounding.
Winter of course, invites rest and restoration. For a new mother, this might simply mean giving yourself permission to slow down where possible and prioritise warmth, nourishment and connection.
Of course, seasonal practices should always be adapted to your individual circumstances, health and medical needs.
Your emotional wellbeing matters too
Postpartum recovery isn't only physical. Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, changes in identity and the demands of caring for your little love can all contribute to an emotionally challenging time.
Feeling overwhelmed occasionally can be part of adjusting to motherhood, but persistent sadness, anxiety, distress or feeling unable to cope deserves attention. Speaking with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional is an important step if you're concerned about your mental health.

We’ll do a deep dive into your pregnancy and birth story so that treatments are tailored exactly to you and your unique journey within motherhood.
Give yourself time
There can be enormous pressure to "bounce back" after having a baby. But postpartum recovery isn't a race.
Your body has been through an extraordinary experience. Rest, nourishment, support and kindness towards yourself are not a luxury, they are everything and they make ALL the difference to your physical health and emotional well-being so that you can be the best Mumma for your baby.
If you're in the fourth trimester, ask yourself: what would make today feel a little more supported?
